Angry Residents Attack Firefighters in Osun Over Delayed Response
A disturbing incident occurred in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, where angry residents attacked firefighters from the Osun State Federal Fire Service. The attack happened on July 24, 2025, after a vehicle caught fire near MDS Road in the Old Garage Area. People in the vicinity scrambled to find fire extinguishers and water to put out the flames.
When the Federal Fire Service team arrived, they were met with hostility from some residents who claimed the firefighters were slow to respond. The crowd hurled objects at the firefighters and warned them not to stop, claiming the fire had already been mostly handled by then.
The State Controller of the Federal Fire Service in Osun State, Femi Akinjobi, lamented the ill-treatment meted out to his men while attempting to put out the fire. According to Akinjobi, the mob misdirected their anger, and his team deployed to the scene immediately after receiving the distress call. However, they encountered a gridlock on the road, which delayed their response.
Akinjobi further explained that his men were not called directly by the people concerned but by an official of the state Fire Service. When they arrived, the hoodlums started throwing stones at them, forcing his men to quickly leave the scene without causing any damage to their appliances.
The spokesperson for the Osun Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, said operatives at the scene prevented the firemen from attack, but Akinjobi disputed this, stating that the police operatives present did not prevent the mob from venting their anger on the firemen.
The incident highlights the need for improved emergency services, community relations, and infrastructure in Osun State. The Osun State Fire Service faces challenges, including inadequate water supplies, limited resources, and logistical issues, which can hinder their response times. Experts and civic groups have called for increased investment in modern firefighting infrastructure and public education on emergency response protocols.
